Headshot of Kevin Portillo

Growing up, I remember sitting in class, half-listening, as I doodled in the margins of my notes. Much to the chagrin of my teachers, they would scold me for it, but even still, I couldn't focus. All I wanted to do was draw, and if I wasn't creating something, I just wasn't engaged. It's probably why I felt so detached for most of my school life. When I reflect on my journey from that kid, to aimless teen, to engineering student, to now a designer, I realize I've been chasing that feeling from when I was young.

These days, my creative approach is a balance between curiosity, analytical thinking, and creative problem-solving. I believe inspiration can be found anywhere — in books, movies, even take-out menus — but I do  have a soft spot for illustration and art. For me, the exploration of a problem is just as interesting as arriving at its solution
